My children are loud.

I was at an event yesterday with Katie’s kindergarten class and was chatting with other parents about how you eventually begin to tune out the volume level of your family. It’s true. I don’t even realize how collectively loud we are until… moments like this Sunday when I’m sitting down to eat breakfast in a diner and notice that our booth is the loudest in the place. Charlie is squealing, demanding more toast. Amy and Katie are singing the theme to Barney (Katie doesn’t even watch the show). I’m trying to talk to Chris about our plans for the day - mostly whining about it - and it hits me: we are freakin’ loud. Crazy loud.

And I had a flashback to my grandmother’s holiday events. My grandmother had eight children and as many grandchildren. Add spouses, friends, children from other marriages… You couldn’t breathe from the squeals and the arguing and football on TV and food sizzling on the stove. Granny’s tiny house - come Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas (and many holidays in between) - was remarkably, awesomely loud. As a kid, I have to say, I found it really rather comforting. It was family.

So, every now and again, when I find myself yelling at the kids to stop yelling (yeah, there’s irony there), I need to pause and remember what it was like growing up.

Lovely photo. We are still waiting for some sign of fall. Our first day under 100 was yesterday, but it’s still too early to get hopeful. Once we are under that mark, the garden will have a second wind, almost like spring. Can’t wait.
