It’s Date Night

April 30, 2009

Date night is a big deal.

For quite awhile, Chris and I have been ships passing in the night. Not even so much passing as kind of speeding by. Between work and school (the kids going, Chris teaching), Girl Scouts, social events, speaking… It had all gotten to be far too much. And I never wanted to be one of those moms. You know the ones. The ones who are so busy running around that they don’t even seem to notice their husbands anymore. I have friends like that, I’m sure you do, too.

And I married Chris because, well, you know, I kind of liked spending time with him. The not spending time with him had to stop.

Fortunately for us, SuperNanny changed jobs about two months ago. She became available. And despite our ridiculous schedules, we figured out that we can carve out time on Thursdays. Voila. Date night Thursdays.

Of course, babysitting fees for three kids are not cheap. I joke that we usually go out for beer and pizza, but if you add in the babysitting fees, I actually have steak and wine. But it’s totally worth it.

Our date nights are a far cry from the date nights of yore. For one, we’re often back on the same night. Sometimes, even before nightfall. I kid you not. Those days of closing down the bars? Long gone. If we make it past 9:00pm, we feel like hellraisers.

But there’s also a lot less pressure to do anything cool. Usually, it’s jeans and a tee shirt and off to the local bar. We grab a beer and a sandwich (our local bar has amazingly good food) and chat with the regulars. Sometimes, we’re lucky enough to catch “Cash Cab” on TV – I’m totally addicted.

We talk about work far too much. But that’s okay. In between a hefe-weizen and a game of pool, administrative crap doesn’t seem so bad. It is one of the good things about working with your husband – he understands why I’m still thinking about payroll and other admin issues long after the work day has ended.

So in a bit, I’ll be casting off the work clothes and heading out the door. I highly recommend that you do the same!

And you are giving to a good cause by paying said babysitter who is insanely broke. You are indirectly supporting my nonprofit.
