Hopefully, you’ll be seeing less of me.

Not on the blogosphere. Just generally.

During my stupidity-related hospitalization (let’s just say it involved a lot of gardening in the heat, moving of furniture down two flights of stairs by myself and a bolt cutter), the wonderful doctor who was treating me in the ER (and I’m not being cheeky, he really was wonderful) asked me a few questions about my health and my family history. And this is what I had to tell him: There is a history of cancer, severe heart disease, diabetes and obesity in my family.

Now, this isn’t particularly exciting news except for the fact that I never got around to seeing that cardiologist, which I had to fess up to. The doctor reminded me that, under the circumstances, that was not very clever. This, I know. And when I was talking to my dad (who has heart disease) and my mother (who has heart strain brought on by three pregnancies, apparently quite common), I realized that while I don’t feel old and while I don’t want to consider myself old, if I do not take care of myself, I will be old before I know it. And I will rue all of this stupidity and ego and well, let’s face it, fear about my health and what any of it means.

So I am making an appointment with the damn cardiologist today and will hopefully keep it this time.

I am also trying to lose some weight. My goal is to lose 40 pounds, though that’s awfully optimistic. That would put me at the skinniest I’ve been since college probably. And while a diet is nothing to fear for most people, I do have this history. You know the one. And any kind of weight related scheme is a little bit scary for me.

All of that said, it is a choice, I know, for me to be this weight and to continue to avoid the consequences. And since I insist that other people accept the responsibility for their choices, I know that I should, too.

Let me know if you need any “kiddie coverage” or a walking buddy -

You know, that history could also cause heart damage. I hope they don’t find anything but agree with the doc that you should get it checked. Just think about how your kids would feel if anything happened to you. We as busy women just don’t take good enough care of ourselves because we’re always putting our family members’ needs first. Good luck!! :)
