Moving On

No, not that kind of moving on… This week, I officially announced that I will be leaving b5media. I put in my resignation on Thursday.

What does this all mean?

Well, for starters, I won’t be writing on Brewha-ha or Gossip Girl Report as of the end of the month. They were b5-owned blogs and I was just a writer on those blogs. So, I’ll be saying goodbye shortly.

I’ll also be leaving as Channel Editor for the Business Channel. This was a really difficult decision for me to make. I really do love my bloggers and I have worked so hard to grow and promote the channel. Walking away from all of that is painful. But necessary.

The good news? I’ll continue to write taxgirl. I own the domain and the trademark on taxgirl - it’s been my baby for awhile. At the end of the month, I’ll be switching over to just me, no network. It’s a bit scary. Wish me luck!

Weird weather today

68 degrees out.

The next three evenings, the lows will be in the 20s with snow forecast!

What’s up with this weather?

It’s Snowing Out.

It’s snowing out, which is a far cry from last week. In fact, on Sunday, it was 19 degrees out, colder than it had been in a very long time here in Philly.

I have not been out to enjoy the snow. First of all, it’s really nothing to write home about (though enough to get a mention on the blog!) - just a few large-ish flakes. Second, as much as I love a couple of good wintry days, I’m really not feeling it right now.

As a response, no doubt, to the days and days of trauma here at the house - what with the vomiting and other unpleasantness - I apparently felt the need to take all of the bugs and viruses on in a short time span (you know, get it all out at once). What this meant was that the 12+ hours of vomiting and “etc” landed me in the ER last night, a wee bit dehydrated and with a monster headache. Two bags of fluid with some Zoflan and some pain reliever/anti-inflammatory stuff mixed in later, I was feeling much better. Of course, by that time, it was also nearly midnight. My wonderful hubby sat at the ER with me for about 8 hours - and my lovely friends watched my children for that same time.

It is nice to have people to count on. I thought about this after my initial crying jag when I went through the “why do other moms have their mom to run to with things go wrong?” phase. And I quickly stopped that (I think I was delirious) because the reality is that my parents live far away, my husband’s parents cannot help out and that is what it is.

Of course, a few hours later we were treated to the behaviour of an overbearing mother in the ER. You see, “Anne”, I’ll call her Anne even though it’s not her real name and I do know her real name as does everyone else in the ER because she and her folks made such a scene, arrived at the ER with a friend. It was a crowded ER. Like me, Anne was complaining of being dehydrated. Unlike me, Anne was able to wander around with her friend and - yes - drink a cup of coffee. She was also able to call the doctor at her college, who had told her that she had the flu and to go home, to tell him that he basically called her a liar and now (horrors!) she was being admitted to the ER.

Anne’s parents (from NJ, so not from next door) finally made an appearance, all crazy about her being at the hospital. When she was finally admitted to a room, #11, next to me, her mother was whining about how she couldn’t believe that they had to wait an hour to be seen. It was a very crowded ER and I’ll tell you many, many folks (like myself) waited much more than an hour to be seen. And despite the fact that folks are supposed to be admitted based on level of care needed, Anne was taken before quite a number of other folks - which raised some eyebrows. I suppose that had a lot to do with the loud entourage that Anne brought with her - she added some older guy who were guessing was her uncle. Or maybe it was just her father - Chris heard him talking about calling an attorney, no doubt to sue the college.

Ay carumba. And you know that some attorney will no doubt take this case. And the lesson that Anne will take from this is that all she has to do when she feels wronged - whether she was or not - is yell a lot. Nice.

But I got some fluids and went home, feeling a lot better, though tired.

Ames got up when I got home. I think she was a bit freaked out by the pace of the day (join the club, sister). She just wanted to be held for awhile.

Charlie was crazy happy to see me this morning. He clung to me like a little monkey.

Katie was… well, Katie.

So, hopefully, I’ll fight off the rest of this nastiness shortly and all will return to normal. Well, as normal as it ever gets here.

Who Says It’s February?

It is absolutely lovely out. It purports to be 47 degrees out but there’s just no way. It’s far too nice. It’s warm and sunny - not warm like June but far warmer than it needs be for February!

It’s been an oddly relaxing day after a week of vomit, snot and cranky bloggers (that’s for another day).

And despite the looks of my living room, I got quite a bit accomplished. I managed to finish some more laundry in the early morning and pick up my Rx at the pharmacy - all before 9am. I popped into my favorite bakery to get a decaf and a hot cross bun. I love hot cross buns! Hooray for the season. Also a fan of hot cross buns? My son.

I headed home to clean up a bit, update taxgirl.com and make some calls.

I picked up Amy from school and then swung over to Target. Spent far too much money but managed to replace Amy’s Dorothy shoes that had been trashed - she now has “extra pink” shiny shoes. We also got Valentine’s cards and candy for school.

Chris was at jury duty all day. Well, not all day. They sent him home early if he “promised to go back to work” which he did, at the law library.

It’s now almost 3:30pm. This horrible, terrible week is almost over. I can hear the angels singing already…

I Hope Those Farmers Are Wrong.

From Farmers Almanac, for my region:

Winter will be about a degree milder than normal, on average. Precipitation will be a bit above normal across southern New England and eastern Long Island and below normal elsewhere. Snowfall will be near to slightly below normal, with the snowiest periods in mid-December, mid- to late January, and mid-February. The coldest temperatures will occur in early and late December, mid-January, and early and mid-February.

April and May will be slightly warmer than normal, with above-normal rainfall north of the District of Columbia and below-normal rainfall to its south.

Summer will be rainier and slightly warmer than normal, on average. The hottest temperatures will occur in mid- to late June and mid-July.

Expect a hurricane in the last week of September. Otherwise, September and October will be slightly drier than normal, with near-normal temperatures.

Tea for Two.

It was nice enough last night that Chris and I sat down and had a cup of tea while watching Top Chef (which, btw, was quite shocking - anybody watch?).  You can’t drink hot tea while it’s hot out, it just doesn’t feel right (coffee is another story).  But last night, with some cool air circulating, I had a nice cup of tea.  Ahh.  Another sign that fall is on its way, possibly?

Hot, hot, hot.

It is sooo hot here.  Africa hot.  Wilmington broke a century old heat record on yesterday.  So glad that we were here for it.

Who said it could be this hot?

I know what you’re thinking… another post about the weather?  Well, it’s just that annoying.

Remember, I moved away from 90 degree days and 75%+ humidity for a reason… um, because it sucks.  And while, yes, it’s miserable elsewhere, too, that doesn’t make me feel any better.  Thanks anyway, Mom.

On the plus side, I do have more things to talk about.  Interesting things.  Life changing things.  Check in a little later to find out… (and no, I’m not pregnant with Tom Cruise’s baby and I didn’t buy any of Paris Hilton’s garbage on eBay)

A Change of Scenery

Sometimes that’s all you need to gain a little perspective.

And I decided that it would do us all some good.  So on Wednesday, I packed up the whole family (well, such as we are, Chris is still in Germany) - Lyle included - left the house and headed off for some relaxation away from the house.  It was a nice reprieve from the stress of late.

Now, back at home, the temperatures are dropping (thank goodness), Chris is coming home in a few days (well, six, but if I say few, it feels like less) and I have some things percolating.

Thanks for your kind thoughts.  They were really appreciated.
