Legal-Schmegal (Beagle)

A lot has been written and talked about with respect to the “Ellen dog fiasco.”  And I thought I’d take a moment to add my thoughts because… well, why not have yet another perspective, right?
Actually, I feel kind of strongly about this, which is why I wanted to say something.  I’ve seen a lot [...]

Who Says Branding Doesn’t Pay?

From the San Francisco Chronicle:
Officials at UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law spent nearly $25,000 on a branding consultant to help them give the school a new name: “UC Berkeley School of Law.” Dean Christopher Edley Jr. said the money was well-spent because people will now understand that that the law school is tied [...]

Idiot Parents Should Go To Jail

Wow. And wow.
A home-schooled teenager decided to plan an attack on a local high school a la Columbine. It didn’t happen. But it could have. Police found a number of weapons in his bedroom including 30 air-powered guns, swords, knives, hand grenades and (my favorite) a 9mm assault rifle that the [...]

The good news is…

That the conference I was dreading this week got postponed.
The bad news is that it was rescheduled for Monday.
It is a pro bono case that has gone terribly wrong.  It’s dragged on for three years (not a typo).  There have been threats of violence to my office, lots of nastiness.
And that’s all I can say [...]

Andrew Speaker Wants You To Know He’s Really Not A Jerk. Jerk.

There’s an interesting article here at law.com about Andrew Speaker - the TB guy - and how he’s (gasp) having a hard time overcoming his negative image after the scandal. He just can’t “get” how people don’t like him.
Sob.
It’s almost too much to bear.
And - get this - he doesn’t have money to defend [...]

Blogging Scholarship.

Seriously, this is just nuts.  In a great kind of nuts way.  And I would think all of you law students would qualify.  Read all about it.  Win some money.  Make me proud.

Is Your Blog Worthy of a $10,000 Scholarship?
Do you maintain a weblog and attend college? Would you like $10,000 to help pay for [...]

Insurance is Evil. And necessary.

I have received a couple of queries about insurance and being a solo practitioner, so I thought I’d spill.
I want to preface my answer with a couple of gratuitous comments about the horror that is the insurance field. Insurance companies are, in my opinion, the devil. They are worse than credit card companies [...]

$1000 per hour… Your vomit point?

I know, nobody likes the word vomit. But I read this today on law.com (taken from the Wall Street Journal). Beyond the issue of the hourly rate, I just loved the fact that they used the comment “possible vomit point for clients.” It makes me giggle.

The hourly rates of the country’s top [...]

This is a test. This is only a test.

My search for happiness has taken a twist.  Last night, someone asked me about being a lawyer and whether I would recommend it (ironically, I’ve also received quite a bit of email asking this same question on my tax blog - I’m making it part of a “back to school” series coming up).  I thought [...]

Stuck in the Middle Again.

No, not a commentary about being a middle child.  Or being in NC.  It’s about scum-sucking lawyers the profession.
You may recall that I was irritated to learn that we were added as a defendant in a lawsuit that we have nothing to do with.  Zippo.
After much consternation and yelling (not from me), icky plaintiff’s lawyer [...]
