I haven’t been terribly diligent with updates on my February challenge to conserve more… That’s because it’s not going all that well.
First of all, the amount of garbage in my house is staggering to me (though hardly as much as a number of folks on my block - not sure what’s going on in those houses). And the #1 resource that’s wasted? Toilet paper. I now understand why Jeff Foxworthy fears that he’s single-handedly killing off the rain forests by having girls…
Conserving more is challenging. I consider myself a pretty environmentally aware kind of girl. I walk or take public transit where I can. I recycle. I don’t drive a gas-guzzler. I keep my heat low at my house.
But the challenge wasn’t to wax poetic about what I do already, it was to conserve more. So…
I joined a local environmental group this week (Wissahickon Action on Global Warming) and plan to watch "An Inconvenient Truth" with the group this week.
And I’ve volunteered to help plan an Earth Day Awareness Block Party.
I’ll keep you posted.

And the front runner so far? Smiling more. I’ll do my best, but really, I can only do so much… I won’t tell you my favorite but I will say that it’s not one of the top three so far.

I didn’t realize that my 43 things challenge would be complicated by technical problems. It appears that Poll Monkey doesn’t work well with Safari or Firefox. Their technical support has been really lovely, but despite the fact that I am paying for the poll, most of my readers don’t seem to be able to vote and/or view the results… I am desperately seeking another poll service (any recommendations?) for March - I will keep you apprised on the results of the current poll for February (including comments, which I encourage you to leave) via regular posts.

You may have noticed that I have listed my 43 things in my sidebar. Chris did. He asked me if I was actually doing any of them.
"Um," I said. "I plan to."
"When?" he asked.
"Some day?" I asked kind of sheepishly.
I was caught. I’m good at making lists. But lately? Lately I’ve lost my edge. And that stinks.
So, this is the scoop. I’m going to do some of these 43 things… and you’re going to help me! Each month, I will run a poll in my sidebar. You vote on what you want me to try and do for the month. And if you have a better idea, you can vote for that, too. I will make an effort to do it and I’ll blog about it.
Yes, there are some caveats (I’m a lawyer - what did you expect?):
- It has to be legal
- It has to be practical (I can’t climb Mt. Everest next month)
- It has to be something that won’t get my mother kicked out of her church (you know what I mean)
- It has to be challenging, but not impossible
- It has to be do-able within a month
- In keeping with the last caveat, it needs to be seasonally appropriate - don’t ask me to scuba dive in Philly in February
At the end of each month, I’ll announce the winning challenge and I’ll get started. I’ll try to post something every week updating you on my progress… If you just want to read about the challenge, you can click on "43 things" under my category cloud to read the update.
