It’s Monday! Okay, barely. But still Monday. I can just make my top ten and remain honest.
Today’s top ten is dedicated to my camping trip. It’s the Top Ten Things That I Learned While Camping. Here we go:
1. I will never be an arsonist. I am not good with matches.
2. I’m a good mom. I make sure that all of my kids are properly slathered with suntan lotion when they go out. Me? Not so much. With the combination of half-assed suntan application and my fair Welsh roots, I have managed to look like Neopolitan ice cream. Only melty.
3. Fishing feels gross but is a lot of fun. We caught nothing but seaweed. The kids loved it.
4. Worms squiggle when you stick them on a hook. This will freak out my vegan nanny. That’s right – I carried around a styrofoam cup of worms that I stuck on a hook. Don’t ever call me girlie again.
5. Weather people lie. They lie a lot. 0% rain really means “downpour.” And “partly cloudy” means “you will burn like a mother.” See #2.
6. It costs 5 times more to send my dog “camping” for the weekend than it does to send my family of five. Go figure. Yeah, you can bet we’re making some changes.
7. Baked potatoes cook a lot faster when placed in the middle of a fire than in an oven. Who would have guessed? Ten years of college and grad school, you’d think this would have come up.
8. I’ve been wasting money on American Girl dolls and fancy toys. All Katie really ever wanted/needed was a large rock.
9. Air mattresses are much more comfortable when inflated. Just saying.
10. Campers can guess which nights our family made S’mores simply by looking at my son. He enjoys S’mores. In his belly. On his face. On his shirt.
I love camping.
Really.
We’ve gone twice this summer already. Both up there with the best family vacations we’ve had.
If you haven’t done it, go. You won’t be sorry.

You are so funny! I chortled– thanks for that! Nothing like a good chortle on a boring Tuesday afternoon– and through a headache, even.
I have a blog called “Picture Camping” (www.rjnbenterprises.blogspot.com) in which I feature people’s camping stories, when mine run low (going this weekend– yeehah!), and I would love to send my readers your way. I’d like to quote #2 and then give your link.
Would that be okay? Hoping so,
Jean B. in SC
Absolutely! Thanks for asking!
