Hi, my name is Kelly and I am (gasp) a tax attorney.
When I was a little girl, I used to watch shows like Perry Mason and Matlock and believe that being an attorney was all about the drama in the court room. And I thought, “That’s for me!”
Now that I’m actually an attorney, I realize that it’s not about the drama at all. It’s about effectively presenting information to your audience. In other words, it’s about who can present the best version of the truth to the judge, jury, IRS - or whomever is listening. As a blogger and an attorney, that’s exactly is what I do every day.
I currently live and work in Philadelphia, PA. I moved to Philly from the rural South to attend Temple University School of Law where I earned my J.D. and my LL. M Taxation (that’s a fancy way of saying that I’m a tax lawyer with my Master’s Degree in Tax). Since law school, I’ve clerked with IRS, worked in private practice for a couple of law firms and a trust company. One day, I convinced my husband - who is also an attorney - to quit his fancy high-paying job and open a law firm with me. Imagine my surprise when he listened to me (that never happens).
Well, maybe he listens to me once or twice, because we decided that having a law firm together wasn’t crazy enough. We also got a dog, got married and had three children. Yes, in that order.
My husband says that I often talk about my family as though you know who everybody is, so here’s the quick rundown: The dog’s name is Lyle. My oldest daughter is Katie. My middle child is Amy. The baby (not so much a baby anymore) is Charlie. And my husband is Chris. So, now you have no excuse when I drop names.
When not working, chasing the kids or volunteering, I love to travel, having visited many of our 50 states (and Puerto Rico) as well as travels abroad to Asia and Europe. I like to dig in the dirt, and occasionally raise a decent flower or two in my garden. I also enjoy the occasional martini, but somehow listing drinking as a hobby while in your 30s just sounds sad.
In my spare time, I blog. A lot. It’s a sickness.
This is the blog that started it all, lawmummy, where I blog about being an attorney and a mom. Sometimes it’s all about law, sometimes it’s all about mummy.
I have a few other blogs, too. I’m blogging about tax on b5 for the Business Channel (where I also serve as Channel Editor) at taxgirl.com. I swear it’s not as boring as you think. In fact, I dare to say, I think you’ll like it. It’s all the dirt on tax news, tax policy and tax information. I’ll even answer questions.
I also author Gossip Girl Report about - well, you know, Gossip Girl (you know you love it) - for b5media and just recently, I signed onto to co-author a beer blog with my husband, Brew Ha-Ha.
I promised my husband no more blogs. So instead, I’m working on my second novel and a book about taxes. I also recently picked up a gig writing about tax for a new site: it’s top secret for now but I’ll let you know the second I launch.
Did I mention that I drink a lot of coffee?
